This portrait was inspired by a thought-provoking image of a dear little girl tightly clutching a piece of wood she apparently called ‘Nene’, her imaginary doll. Her expression hit me hard, I wanted to say as much as I possibly could with that ‘look’ she is aiming at the viewer, as though we are looking deeply inside her thoughts.
I worked fast and loose and loved the rawness of the result, the focus purely remaining on one eye, the window to her complex little soul.
My love of monochrome still holds me in it’s spell and charcoal has a life and soul all of it’s own, I hope this little soulful face holds you in her spell too.
